Grants & Finance
Grants and VAT relief may help reduce the cost of creating a safer, more accessible bathroom, and while we do not administer funding directly, we’re here to guide you once funding is approved.
What is a Disabled Facilities Grant?
A Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) is a government-funded grant provided by local councils to help people with disabilities make essential adaptations to their home. In England, grants are available up to £30,000 (with higher amounts sometimes available depending on your local authority).
The grant is designed to support people living with physical disabilities, long-term health conditions, cognitive conditions such as dementia, or terminal illness. It can be used to fund improvements that make your home safer and easier to use.
This may include installing accessible bathrooms, walk-in showers for elderly users, wet rooms for disabled or wheelchair users, or other mobility adaptations.
Importantly, receiving a DFG will not affect any other benefits you currently receive.
Are You Eligible?
Eligibility for a Disabled Facilities Grant depends on your personal circumstances and may vary across the UK. You may be eligible if you:
- Have a registered disability or long-term medical condition
- Are on a low income and have limited savings (typically under £6,000)
- Intend to live in the property for the duration of the grant period (usually 5 years)
- Require adaptations to support safe and independent living
Additional considerations:
- Grants for children under 18 are not usually means tested
- Landlords can apply on behalf of tenants with disabilities
- You may be able to reapply if your condition has changed or worsened
Grant Application Process
Applying for the grant is done through your local council. While the process can vary slightly, it typically follows these steps:
-
1. Apply through your local authority
You will need to contact your local council to request an assessment. This is the first and most important step, as funding must be approved before any work begins.
-
2. Assessment and Review
An Occupational Therapist may visit your home to assess your needs and recommend the most suitable adaptations, such as a walk-in bath, accessible shower or wet room.
-
3. Approval and quotations
If your application is approved, you may be asked to obtain quotations from specialist companies like Living Well Bathrooms. Once approved, the council will confirm how the funding will be paid — either directly to you or to the installer.
