A Life-Changing Ground Floor Shower Transformation
A bespoke walk-in shower helping restore independence without the need to move home.
Success Story: The Clark Family
Creating Independence with a Ground Floor Walk-In Shower
When Mr & Mrs Clark first contacted Living Well Bathrooms, they were facing a difficult and emotional decision.
Mr Clark had been diagnosed with a muscle-wasting condition, which was gradually affecting his mobility. Living in a traditional three-bedroom semi-detached home, the couple were concerned about how he would safely continue using their upstairs bathroom.
Like many people in similar situations, they had considered moving to a bungalow but they loved their home, their neighbours and their local community, and wanted to find a way to stay.
The Challenge
The couple had already approached two other companies, both of whom told them that creating a suitable ground floor bathroom simply wasn’t possible.
They had identified their dining room as a future bedroom for Mr Clark and wanted to convert an adjoining utility space into a fully functional accessible shower room but needed expert guidance to make it work.
Our Solution
Our experienced surveyor, Peter, visited the property and quickly saw the potential.
Rather than seeing limitations, he designed a bespoke walk-in shower room that would meet both current and future needs.
The solution included:
- A fully accessible walk-in shower with level access
- A basin for everyday use
- Installation of an EasiLoo electronic toilet lifter for added support
- Smart layout design to maximise space in a compact area
To bring the design to life, we carried out all necessary building and installation work, including:
- Structural adjustments within the utility space
- Relocating the existing loft hatch
- Installing new plumbing and water feeds
- Connecting drainage to the existing system
All work was completed by our in-house team over approximately three weeks.
The Result
The transformation has been truly life-changing for Mr Clark.
With his new walk-in shower bathroom, he is now able to bathe independently again, something that had become increasingly difficult.
In his own words, he is now: “Up, showered and dressed by 6:30am before Mrs Clark is even awake.”
Previously, he had relied on his wife to help him use the upstairs bathroom.
The addition of the EasiLoo toilet lifter has also made a significant difference, providing the support he needs to sit and stand safely despite reduced strength and balance.
A Home That Still Works for Them
This project is a perfect example of how thoughtful design and expert planning can transform a home without the need to move.
By creating a ground floor accessible bathroom, Mr & Mrs Clark were able to stay in the home they love, maintaining their independence and quality of life.
Their experience has been so positive that they later invited us back to redesign their upstairs en-suite for Mrs Clark.

FAQs
Can you create an accessible bathroom downstairs?
Yes, in many cases we can convert existing downstairs spaces such as utility rooms, spare rooms or dining areas into fully functional accessible shower rooms. Every home is different, so we carry out a detailed survey to explore the best options available.
Do I need to move house if I can no longer use my upstairs bathroom?
Not necessarily. Many customers assume they need to move to a bungalow or adapted property, but bespoke ground floor bathroom adaptations can often allow you to remain safely and comfortably in the home you already love.
What is an EasiLoo toilet lifter and how does it help?
The EasiLoo is an electronic toilet lifter designed to help people sit down and stand up more safely and easily. It is particularly beneficial for individuals with reduced strength, balance issues or progressive mobility conditions. It fits over the existing toilet and does not require any connection to water or electricity as it is battery powered. The EasiLoo Plus has bidet functionality such as a rear wash, dryer, night light and heated seat and will require connection to water and electivity.
How long does a ground floor bathroom conversion take?
Every project is different depending on the amount of building work required, but most accessible bathroom transformations are completed within a few weeks. The Clark family’s project took approximately three weeks from start to finish.
