A Spacious Wet Room Designed for Care, Comfort and Independence

A bespoke wet room enabling safe, assisted bathing for wheelchair users at home.

Success Story: The Allen Family

Transforming a Bedroom into a Wheelchair-Accessible Wet Room

At Living Well Bathrooms, we believe that the right design can completely transform everyday life and the Allen family’s story is a perfect example.

Mr Allen, a lively 89-year-old, had recently become wheelchair-bound. This meant he could no longer safely access the upstairs bathroom, which was beginning to impact both his health and overall wellbeing.

Like many families, they were adapting as best they could even using the dining room as a temporary bedroom but it was clear that a long-term solution was needed.

The Challenge

The family had an unused bedroom on the ground floor and wanted to convert it into a fully functional accessible wet room.

The space needed to:

  • Accommodate Mr Allen in his wheelchair
  • Provide enough room for a carer to assist
  • Include showering, toileting and washing facilities
  • Remove all barriers to access

This wasn’t just about convenience it was about restoring dignity, safety and comfort.

Our Solution

Our experienced surveyor visited the family at their home in Kent and worked closely with Mr and Mrs Allen and their daughter to understand their needs.

The solution was a fully bespoke wheelchair-access wet room, designed to maximise space while ensuring ease of use for both Mr Allen and his carers.

The design included:

  • A fully level access wet room with no barriers
  • Spacious layout for wheelchair and carer access
  • A modern showering area designed for assisted bathing
  • Basin positioned for ease of use
  • Installation of a bidet toilet to support personal hygiene
  • Carefully planned layout to optimise movement and safety

To help the family visualise the transformation, we created detailed 2D plans and a lifelike 3D design bringing the concept to life before installation began.

The Result

The finished space is a beautifully designed ground floor wet room that perfectly balances practicality and style.

Mr Allen can now bathe safely and comfortably, with the support he needs all within a space that feels open, accessible and thoughtfully designed.

The transformation has:

  • Removed the stress of navigating stairs
  • Enabled safe, assisted bathing
  • Improved overall comfort and quality of life

Both we and the Allen family were delighted with the result a space that truly meets their needs today and into the future.

FAQs

  • Can a bedroom be converted into a wet room?

Yes, in many homes an unused bedroom, utility room or downstairs space can be transformed into a fully accessible wet room. With careful planning and expert design, we can create safe bathing spaces almost anywhere in the home.

  • Are wet rooms suitable for wheelchair users?

Absolutely. Level access wet rooms are one of the best bathroom solutions for wheelchair users, providing barrier-free access and plenty of space for movement, transfers and assisted bathing.

  • Can a wet room be designed for carers as well as the user?

Yes, we regularly design wet rooms with both the user and carers in mind. Spacious layouts, accessible fixtures and carefully planned movement areas help make assisted routines safer and more comfortable for everyone involved.

  • What are the benefits of a bidet toilet for elderly or disabled users?

Bidet toilets can significantly improve personal hygiene and independence, particularly for individuals with reduced mobility, arthritis or limited dexterity. They also reduce the need for twisting, reaching and manual wiping.
