The room is protected using a waterproof tanking system beneath the visible surface finishes. Tiles, wall panels and grout alone should not be relied upon as the waterproof barrier; the underlying preparation and waterproofing system are essential to preventing water from penetrating the structure of the building.
Depending on the room and the person using it, the shower area may remain fully open or include a glass screen, half-height screens or curtains to help control water and support assisted bathing.

How Is a Wet Room Waterproofed?
A properly installed wet room relies on more than tiles or wall panels. Before the visible finishes are applied, the shower area and often a wider part of the room is protected using a specialist waterproof tanking system. Particular care is required around corners, joints, drains and service penetrations.
The floor must also be formed with the correct fall towards the drain so water clears efficiently rather than collecting across the room. The drainage arrangement, floor construction and available depth all need to be assessed before the design is finalised.
Water-resistant adhesive and grout are not substitutes for a proper waterproofing system.
